Teaching Artist Essentials: Lesson Planning and Scaffolding

Join TBA for the first of two workshops covering the essentials every teaching artist needs to know!

Teaching Artist Essentials are impactful 3-hour workshops designed to give foundational skills to early and mid-career teaching artists. These workshops have been developed in conversation with Bay Area TYA companies and are designed to focus on topics that artists who primarily trained in performance often have to learn on-the-job when they enter a teaching environment. Through these workshops, teaching artists will gain practical information that will directly impact their work in the classroom, studio, and rehearsal hall. 

This first workshop will focus on lesson planning and scaffolding. Led by experienced arts educators, Participants will take a pedagogical look at building out curriculum for students different age groups and environments.

When and Where

This workshop is being offered twice with both sessions covering the same information. Attendees must select which session they will be attending upon registration, changes can be made up until Wednesday, May 6.

Session A: Saturday, May 9th from 9am - 12pm

Session B: Monday, May 11th from 6pm - 9pm

Both sessions will take place at Studio A.C.T. located at 30 Grant Ave. in San Francisco

Pricing

The cost of this class is $50 per teaching artist. Companies that send 5 or more teaching artists will receive a $10 discount per registrant. If an independent teaching artist would like to attend without the support of a TYA company, we have a NOTAFLOF policy.

About the Facilitators

Christine Young is an Associate Professor at University of San Francisco, where she teaches in the Rhetoric and Language, Honors College and Performing Arts departments. Young researches the impact of creativity and wellness as pedagogical strategies in undergraduate classrooms, with a focus on teaching students self-regulation tools and designing assignments and learning spaces to support neurodiverse learners. Young has led numerous trainings on how to effectively integrate creative teaching practices into diverse educational settings. She is committed to supporting the transformation of education through holistic teaching and revising the curriculum to foreground historically marginalized voices.

Ely Sonny Orquiza is a 2023 YBCA 100 Honoree, inaugural Cali Catalyst Recipient, and two-time Theatre Bay Area Grant awardee. His body of work spans American Conservatory Theater, Magic Theatre, Center Theater Group, East West Players, Cal Performances, The Kennedy Center, and Theatre Rhinoceros, among many others. He is the originator of the Living Document of BIPOC Experiences in Bay Area Theatre and currently serves as Director of Education and Community at Magic Theatre.
