Description

“Any leader of the dance is god…”

BARD Theatre’s BACCHAE is a movement-driven retelling of Euripides' 2,000 year old tragedy performed by a primarily queer cast that never stops dancing. Dionysus, god of wine and ecstasy, has returned to his home of Thebes to spread his bacchic rites of radical self-expression and collective joy. Pentheus, king of Thebes and devoted enforcer of patriarchal order is determined to stop him. BACCHAE asks the question: how much blood is worth the pursuit of being free?

Featuring the world premiere of acclaimed classicist Dr. Emily Wilson’s translation, this production is helmed by local transgender director Eamon Ervolina and choreographer Edward Paddock.
