Tiny Beautiful Things is intentionally written to support inclusive, nontraditional, and expansive casting. Roles are not defined by race, ethnicity, body type, gender identity, sexual orientation, or physical ability. Actors of all backgrounds are encouraged to audition. The characters are defined by emotional truth, generosity, and storytelling ability, not by appearance.

Roles:

WOMAN (also “Dear Sugar”) Age: 40s–50s (Flexible)

Description: The emotional center of the play. She becomes “Dear Sugar,” an anonymous advice columnist whose wisdom is forged from lived experience rather than expertise. Wry, compassionate, and deeply human, she carries the weight of grief, love, regret, and survival. This actor must balance humor with raw vulnerability and possess a strong storytelling presence. She also plays Sugar at different stages of her life, revealing the personal cost behind her generosity.

MAN Age: 40s–60s (Flexible)
Description: Plays a variety of key figures in Sugar’s life and in the letter writers’ stories, including Sugar’s husband and other men shaped by love, loss, and longing. He brings steadiness, warmth, and emotional honesty, often serving as a grounding force. This role requires sensitivity, quiet strength, and the ability to shift seamlessly between characters.

YOUNG WOMAN Age: 20s–30s (Flexible)
Description: Portrays multiple letter writers and figures from Sugar’s past, including Sugar as a younger woman. She embodies curiosity, vulnerability, impulsiveness, and hope. This actor must move fluidly between humor and heartbreak, capturing the urgency of people searching for connection and meaning.

YOUNG MAN Age: 20s–30s (Flexible)
Description: Plays several letter writers and supporting roles, often representing uncertainty, anger, tenderness, and yearning. He gives voice to people wrestling with identity, relationships, grief, and self-worth. Requires emotional openness, strong listening skills, and the ability to create distinct characters with minimal external changes.

ENSEMBLE NOTE: All four performers share equal responsibility for the storytelling. Actors remain visible and fluid in their transformations, reinforcing the play’s core message: human experience is shared, messy, and beautifully complex. Strong ensemble collaboration and generosity toward fellow actors are essential.
