Ongoing Murder Mysteries: Non-Union, Paid
Ongoing Murder Mysteries: Non-Union, Paid
The Clue Collective is a woman run, Bay Area founded, murder mystery company. We are looking to add to our detective pool (people comfortable with running and performing a solo show). While we are based out of San Jose, we perform all over the Bay Area, and beyond. Looking specifically to hire people who reflect the varied makeup of the Bay Area. We perform shows for all sorts of people and are actively seeking more global majority actors.
Each show has a set theme, rules of the game, and a set of clues that will lead to the prescribed killer, but otherwise allow for a lot of flexibility in what happens and are mostly improv. This is not comedic improv (although there certainly could be moments of that), and if you feel comfortable talking to people, it's improv that you can do. We encourage tools, like notepads or clipboards during performance if it makes you feel more confident and comfortable.

Characters:
We are most interested in people who fit into the Detective Role for these auditions and would feel comfortable doing a solo show, but because we do ongoing shows, there are 4 roles that can be available in our shows.
Detective: actors playing the detective in a show feel comfortable facilitating a show, and making sure guests get all the clues that would allow them to solve the murder. Detectives often use notebooks or other similar tools to have the step by step information to work through the show. While you are free to detect mostly how you want, provided the clues that lead to the killer come out in front of the group, we also provide resources for how people have detected the show in the past so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel if you don’t want to. Detectives control the flow of the show and should be comfortable holding attention and controlling the room. Detectives are responsible for 2 out of 3 acts on shared shows, and 3 out of 3 acts on solo shows as they take on the host role as well then.
Show Captain: actors who are the show captain feel comfortable collecting show material from a set pick up point, calling the client and being their point of contact 48 hours before the show through the show itself, organizing rehearsal for actors when there are multiple actors on a show (in a way that works for actor group), and contacting TCC if there are unexpected problems (very rare, and if they happen, we back our actors!) This role is usually combined with the Detective.
Host: actors playing the host feel comfortable leading one act of the show, telling guests how they'll play the game, introducing the characters, and facilitating the "death" (the guest who is performing the dramatic scene). Hosts should feel comfortable holding attention and controlling the room, although they are only responsible for 1 out of the 3 acts, while Detectives on shared shows are responsible for 2 out of 3 acts.
Suspects: actors who feel comfortable carrying a character binder (to help guests know they should as well), and walk around talking to guests, answering questions in character, and encouraging guests to talk to one another.
Pay
$100/show with additional pay bumps for taking on larger roles (host, show captain, detective), or for traveling beyond a certain mileage. We also pay for rehearsal. Shows run 1.5-2 hours with onsite time being no more than 4 hours.
We cannot hire AEA actors at this time.

No need to prepare anything for the auditions, but please bring a headshot and resume. We will be doing improv based on show basics, we will not be playing traditional improv games. If you feel more comfortable wearing a mask to auditions, please do!
For those who sign up on sign up genius, I will send our show rules and a couple of characters to choose from, to think about how to present the rules in character.
