On the 20th Century: In Concert: Non-Union, Volunteer

Audition Non-Union Volunteer

Rarely performed (because putting a train onstage is hard) but possessed of a glorious score, a witty and wacky book, and rollicking entertainment, this is a show that performers and instrumentalists have been wanting to do for years. After the success of last season’s Titanic: In Concert, we have decided to devote one weekend a year to bringing our audiences an underappreciated gem in concert format.

Performed on Broadway by Madeline Kahn, John Cullum, and Imogene Coca, and recently revived with Kristin Chenoweth in the lead, the story concerns the efforts of flamboyant theatrical impresario Oscar Jaffe to persuade glamorous film star (and former amour) Lily Garland to appear in his next production while outwitting rival producers, creditors, her handsome-but-dimwitted paramour, and religious nut Letitia Primrose. And all this in the 16 hours it takes for the 20th Century Ltd. to travel from Chicago to New York!

There will be a 20-piece orchestra onstage and we want to have a company of 24-28.

  • NOTE: The roles of Lily, Oscar, and Letitia are cast. We are seeking actors for the following roles:

  • MAX JACOBS - Baritone; Self important young producer: successful, intense, confident.

  • BRUCE GRANIT - Baritone with a solid F#; young leading man on the ascent, Errol Flynn type: stud, vain, silly, egotistical.

  • OWEN O'MALLEY - Baritone; Oscar's press agent: a boozer, sardonic, self-satirical. He and Oliver are Oscar's two loyal henchmen.

  • OLIVER WEBB - Baritone; Oscar's company manager: ulcerous, worried, fed-up: trying to bring a note of sanity to the surrounding madness.

  • AGNES - Any range; Lily's maid, suffering and bored.

  • CONDUCTOR FLANAGAN - Baritone; Typical solid type who has secretly written a play.

  • CONGRESSMAN LOCKWOOD - Baritone; Typical solid type who has secretly written a play

  • DOCTOR JOHNSON - Baritone; Typical solid type who has secretly written a play.

  • IMELDA THORNTON - Mezzo. Glamorous, imperious, fur-bedecked stage actress who thinks she is a better singer than she is.

  • PORTERS - 4 tap dancing performers of any age/race/gender who can dance and execute four-part harmony, all in sync. If you want to be considered for a Porter, please include a video of you tapping with your song submission.

  • ENSEMBLE - lots of singing and many bits in various scenes. 8 to 12 people needed.

We will be doing all book scenes and music, with most cast members holding their music in a black binder. We will keep staging to a minimum, but the Porters will be dancing a lot.

This will be a fundraiser for SBMT and everyone on staff, crew, in the cast, and orchestra will be donating their time.

Please prepare a song selection of roughly two minutes in length.

It is not necessary to prepare a song from the eras of the shows; it is more important that you show your voice, range, and expression. But if the spirit moves you, we encourage you to have fun with your song choice.

All submissions will be considered for both productions unless you specifically state otherwise.

Provide a headshot and resume when you submit.
