Open Auditions for Kimberly Akimbo

For age 18+, Sunday, April 27

Performances Aug 29 - Sept 14

A Limelight by SVCT production; to be performed at SVCT's Limelight Theater, 16300 Condit Rd, MH.

A play by David Lindsay-Abaire; directed by Allie Bailey

Kimberly Akimbo is your typical sixteen-year old: curious, precocious, and full of insecurity. She also happens to look like she’s 65 years old, due to progeria, a rare condition that causes the human body to age at over four times its normal rate. But this is a minor hindrance compared to contending with her loony family, including a lush of a father, a hypochondriac mother, and a scheming felon for an aunt. But like all adolescents, even Kimberly finds hope and excitement in the possibility of first love. Kimberly Akimbo is a play about making every moment count, particularly when you only get 25% of them.

Auditioners age 18+ are encouraged to try out!

Roles we will be casting:

Kimberly – a 16 year-old girl, played by a woman in her 60s or 70s

Kimberly is bright, witty, and self-aware, dealing with a rare genetic condition (progeria) that causes her to age rapidly. Despite her circumstances, she maintains a dry sense of humor and longs for normalcy and connection. Her journey is about discovering agency and seeking a life beyond her chaotic family.

Buddy – Kimberly’s father, 30s-40s, blue collar, rarely sober

Buddy is an unreliable, often inebriated father who works at a gas station. He’s well-meaning but immature and overwhelmed by the reality of Kimberly’s condition. His denial and escapism make him both tragic and darkly comic.

Pattie – Buddy’s wife, Kimberly’s mother, very pregnant hypochondriac,30s-40s

Pattie is narcissistic, needy, and emotionally unstable. She is obsessed with her own health issues and frequently records audio letters to her unborn child. Her erratic behavior and self-absorption often make Kimberly’s life harder, though she claims to care deeply.

Jeff – a sweet, awkward, D & D playing 16 year-old boy

Quirky, nerdy, and sweet, Jeff is an outsider who quickly befriends Kimberly. He’s into anagrams and awkward science jokes, and he becomes a key part of Kimberly’s emotional journey. His innocence and sincerity contrast sharply with

the chaos around Kimberly.

Debra – Pattie’s sister, 30s, a scam-artist

A manipulative, energetic schemer who’s recently out of jail. Debra is always cooking up a scam and drags Kimberly and others into her dubious plans. Despite her recklessness, she has a twisted charm and genuinely bonds with Kimberly in unexpected ways.
