BREAKDOWN
Tracy Turnblad
A big-hearted, big-haired teenager with an unstoppable spirit and a dream to dance on The Corny Collins Show. She’s optimistic, courageous, and refuses to accept prejudice. Tracy’s energy and warmth inspire those around her to embrace change.
Vocal Range: Mezzo (G3–F5)
Performance Notes: Needs comedic timing, stamina for dance-heavy scenes, and sincerity in social-justice moments.
Edna Turnblad
Tracy’s loving, shy-at-first mother who rarely leaves the house. Over the course of the show, she gains confidence and embraces her own beauty. Traditionally played by a man in drag.
Vocal Range: Alto (F3–E♭5)
Performance Notes: Warmth, physical comedy, and emotional truth are key. Costume quick-changes and dancing in drag are part of the fun.
Wilbur Turnblad
Tracy’s supportive, quirky father who owns the Har-De-Har Hut joke shop. Devoted to Edna, full of dad jokes, and light on his feet when romancing his wife.
Vocal Range: Baritone (A♭2–A♭4)
Performance Notes: Needs natural charm, comic timing, and believable chemistry with Edna.
Penny Pingleton
Tracy’s slightly awkward but sweet best friend. She blossoms from a shy, sheltered girl into a confident young woman.

Performance Notes: Strong comedic instincts, physical awkwardness early, then a noticeable transformation by Act Two.
Seaweed J. Stubbs
A talented, smooth dancer from the African-American community who becomes Penny’s love interest. Charismatic and cool, with a deep sense of justice.
Vocal Range: Tenor (F3–A4)
Performance Notes: Excellent dancer with soulful vocals and stage presence.
Motormouth Maybelle
Seaweed’s mother, a record shop owner, and a passionate advocate for racial integration. She’s larger-than-life with a voice that brings the house down.
Vocal Range: Alto with powerful belt (E3–E5)
Performance Notes: Needs powerhouse vocals, charisma, and the ability to shift from comedic warmth to commanding activism.
Link Larkin
Teen heartthrob on The Corny Collins Show who falls for Tracy. Confident but kind-hearted, with an arc from self-centered to socially aware.
Vocal Range: Tenor (G3–A♭4)
Performance Notes: Smooth vocals, strong dance skills, and genuine romantic chemistry with Tracy.
Amber Von Tussle
Snobby, ambitious, and jealous — she’s Tracy’s main teen rival on the show. Amber is driven to win at any cost, often echoing her mother’s prejudice.
Vocal Range: Mezzo (A3–F5)
Performance Notes: Excellent comedic villain energy and dance skills.
Velma Von Tussle
Amber’s scheming mother, producer of The Corny Collins Show, and a staunch opponent of integration. Glamorous but ruthless.

Charming, upbeat host of The Corny Collins Show. Appears to play along with the network’s rules, but supports integration.
Vocal Range: Tenor (D3–A4)

Prudy Pingleton
Penny’s overbearing, conservative mother. A comic role with quick shifts between prim manners and frantic disapproval.
Performance Notes: Strong comedic timing and physical humor.
Little Inez Stubbs
Seaweed’s younger sister, an energetic dancer with determination beyond her years.
Vocal Range: Mezzo/Alto (B♭3–E♭5)
Performance Notes: Youthful energy, great dancer, strong presence despite smaller stage time.
