Theatre Rhinoceros, the world’s longest-running, continuously producing professional LGBTQ+ theatre, was founded in San Francisco in August 1977 by the late Allan B. Estes, Jr. Early in its 46-year history, The Rhino was the first theatre company in the U.S. to deal with the AIDS epidemic by presenting ‘The AIDS Show: Artists Involved with Death and Survival,’ co-authored by 20 Bay Area artists. After Estes’ untimely death from AIDS, Theatre Rhinoceros was headed by Kristine Gannon, Charles Solomon , Kenneth R. Dixon, Adele Prandin, Doug Holsclaw, and John Fisher (2002 - present).
Theatre Rhinoceros is a bold and inclusive community of artists and arts supporters who develop and produce theatre that enlightens, challenges, and brings joy to our diverse global community. We strive to be a global leader in LGBTQ+ storytelling that encourages and empowers artists and patrons to fight for a more just, equitable, and welcoming world where all may feel safe, seen, and heard.
From its inception, The Rhino has been dedicated to telling the stories of the queer community and creating a welcoming home for artists who are queer or allied to the queer world. Our track record is one of bold, innovative, exciting productions that emphasize the historical underpinning of LGBTQ+ identities and communities. We are committed to giving a platform to and amplifying the voices of historically marginalized, emerging artists and reflecting the immense diversity of our communities onstage, offstage, and in our audiences.
Theatre Rhinoceros develops and produces works of theatre that enlighten, enrich, and explore both the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of our queer community.

How to submit scripts : If you would like to connect with us first, you are more than welcome to attend a season performance - email Crystal at cliu@therhino.org, and we'd be delighted to comp you and meet you after the show!
Once we've gotten to know you, agents can submit client manuscripts to info@therhino.org. Self-representing playwrights, please email 10 pages of your script to info@therhino.org, and please also include 1) a short artist statement regarding your particular interest in Theatre Rhinoceros, 2) a letter of recommendation by a professional theatre colleague/instructor/collaborator, and 3) a 100-word bio.
