Social Justice Training Program

Training

“I know theater heals – but how, exactly?”

“How can I become a more inclusive, responsive artist?”

“What does theater look like at the intersection of emotional awareness and creative liberation?”

“Why perform Shakespeare – or any art – in prisons?”

Answer these questions, and more, with Marin Shakespeare’s second cohort of the Social Justice Training Program. Take a deep dive into yourself with this month-long intensive, featuring weekly workshops led by Returned Artists, Shakespeare for Social Justice teaching artists, and thought leaders in the field. With opportunities for deep play and discovery alongside weekly visits to Marin Shakespeare programs at San Quentin and Folsom state prisons, participants will develop a new understanding of social justice and theater.

Program Outcomes:

  • Participate in Shakespeare-based exercises promoting self-discovery and rich creativity.

  • Learn Drama Therapy approaches to Shakespeare and devised theatre.

  • Learn about Trauma-informed facilitation and peer support building.

  • Build Skills in facilitating positive, inclusive classes.

  • Examine the intersection of social justice and theatre.

  • Create a Culminating Project to share in a final showcase.

Participants who complete the course will be eligible to join Marin Shakespeare’s Shakespeare for Social Justice as volunteers and/or teaching artists.

* PLEASE NOTE: Admission to any California State Prison is not guaranteed and requires obtaining clearance from the prison.
