Mannakin Theater & Dance presents "Terpsichore Speaks!" during Bay Area Theater Week. This play features new choreography with a side of drama (or vice versa) in a premiere play directed by Nathan Cottam and written by David Wiener. Terpsichore Speaks! tells the story of Tanaquil LeClercq (Tanny), Balanchine’s 4th wife, and star of NYCB in the 1950s. In a heartbreaking case of art meets life, Tanny contracts polio on a European tour, eleven years after she played the part of a young girl stricken with polio as part of a March of Dimes fundraiser. The story is told by Terpsichore, the Muse of Dance, portrayed by Nathan Cottam, with Astrid Arvelo dancing Melpomene, the Tragedy Muse to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Tanny, herself, in a recreation of Balanchine’s fundraiser dance, to the very Mozart quintet used by Balanchine.
